Day 14: A Taste of Home

The simplest way for a mother to spoil her visiting college student is to merely offer a home-cooked meal.

Dinner tonight was light but still provided in the typical fashion in our household. Mama prepared individual salads, with an assortment of toppings to add on our own, including raisins, feta cheese, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and Thousand Island dressing. (Both my mom and her sister frequent Whole Foods, and always try to style salads rather nicely. I find their creativity quite adorable.) The rest of the dinner options were sauteed liver and onions (don’t be fooled! they’re rather good), along with a side of pickles in brine and potatoes. The two latter food items, along with my raspberry tea, were unmistakably typical Polish additions. The meal was finished off with a delightful Polish chocolate.

My taste buds are very much satisfied with experiencing the familiar food flavors of home tonight, and anticipate the home cooked meals to come over the next few days.
